Consultation for Coaching in a High Performance Environment specialism opens

We are continuing our work with the Professional Standards Framework and are now moving into the high performance section of the sport and physical activity sector.

The public consultation for the Coaching in High Performance Sport Professional Standard Specialism is now open and ready for contributions.

This is CIMSPA’s first specific venture into the area of talent and high performance within the sector, and marks the beginning of elite and high performance sports based pathways being built into the professional standards framework.

This specialism is for frontline coaches who work in a high performance sport environment. This could be individuals that are employed or deployed in the physical activity sector, or who coach emerging performance and/or elite athletes/players.

The draft standard under consultation has a very specific focus:

  • It has been specifically focused for those coaching high performance/elite athletes/players.
  • It does not outline the knowledge, skills and behaviours to work with athletes/players working within a talent development programme/environment.

We are looking for specific input on this point – whether this standard should be extended to include talent development or whether an additional standard is required.

Roles that such coaches may take up include: Talent Pathway/Academy Coach, Podium Potential Coach, Prepare for Podium Coach, Podium Coach, Assistant Coach and Coach or Head Coach.

As well as the point outlined above, CIMSPA is seeking general feedback on the standard’s content from both individuals and organisations within the sector – especially those with particular expertise in this area.

The rollout of the finished standard will take place early in 2020. Employers will then have a single point of reference to standardise the recruitment, training and professional development of those working in this specialist role.
