Defining the UK sport and physical activity sector

CIMSPA is working to explain how the sport and physical activity sector functions and we want to hear from you.

The sport and physical activity sector is viewed differently by many, both within and outside the sector. This has become increasingly apparent through the misrepresentation of the sector during the analysis of effects of Covid-19 and the ongoing oversights in the government’s guidance regarding the sector. It is essential to agree a standardised “naming” and “glossary of terms” to allow ongoing in-sector benchmarking and cross-survey comparisons, especially in discussions concerning the sector with those who do not operate within it.

This nomenclature is vital for the recognition the sport and physical activity sector deserves as we continue to professionalise and adopt high standards of delivery.

Phill Wright, Business Transformation Manager at CIMSPA said:

“Defining who we are and how we operate as a sector is vital for us to get the recognition that we both want and deserve. Amongst many other things, 2020 has demonstrated that at a government level, sport and physical activity is not clearly understood and this piece of work is the first step in correcting that.”

Your feedback is important to us and will help to develop the definition of the UK sport and physical activity sector through a nomenclature and a clear terminology.
