Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees (the Board) is the overarching decision-making body of CIMSPA and accordingly exercises all the powers of the organisation. It has ultimate responsibility for governing the Chartered Institute.

Currently chaired by Marc Woods, the Board holds a wealth of experience from within and outside of the sector. Elected trustees are CIMSPA members voted for by full members to sit on the Board. Appointed and co-opted trustees are recruited for their specialist knowledge, skills and experience aligned to the needs of the Board. The Board meets at least four times per calendar year and the meeting minutes are publicly available.

The Board’s role

  • Ensure CIMSPA complies with the provisions within the Charter and Statutes
  • Ensure CIMSPA remains focused on the furtherance of its objects as set out in the Charter and Statutes, and that the whole of its work is for the public benefit
  • Apply the charity’s assets exclusively to pursue those objects
  • Agree CIMSPA’s vision, mission and purpose in line with the Charter and Statutes, and regularly review these to ensure they remain fit for purpose
  • Develop a strategy to support CIMSPA to achieve its vision, mission and purpose, and ensure progress is monitored against that strategy
  • Comply with charity law requirements and other laws that apply to CIMSPA
  • Maintain and demonstrate a clear division between the Board’s management and oversight role and the executive’s operational role
  • Be publicly accountable for the funds and assets it governs

Marc

Marc Woods

Marc Woods is a board advisor and gold medal winning Paralympian who has created and delivered leadership, behavioural and communication strategies and development programmes for a range of organisations working with senior executives in 32 different countries and 100 different nationalities.

Marc’s background is integral to his helping organisations perform to the best of their ability, in an ever-disruptive world. He competed internationally as a swimmer for 17 years, winning 12 medals from five Paralympic Games. Over time he became recognised for his ability to get the best from himself and the teams he was part of.

Particularly interested in the attributes, behaviours and values that individuals bring to organisations to balance ‘positive disruption’ and ‘fit’, he is co-author of Beyond the Call and the Coomber-Woods Discretionary Effort tool.

Senior Independent Trustee

Manos
Manos Kapterian

Manos was appointed to the board in May 2018. He is the Chief Operating Officer at Saïd Business School and works closely with the Dean and the Board to shape and deliver the School’s strategic direction. He leads the School’s non-academic operations and the professional services which support the broad range of teaching, research and global facing activities of the Business School.

Manos is a member of both the School Board and the executive leadership team.

Before joining Saïd Business School, Manos had a 20-year career at Pearson, the world’s leading learning company where he held senior commercial, operational and transformation roles working in the UK and Internationally across the examination and publishing sides of the business.

He is passionate about the power of education and life-long learning in unlocking personal and professional growth.

Manos holds an MBA from University of Westminster and is a Fellow at the Chartered Management Institute.

Elected Trustees

Lorna
Lorna Brooks MCIMSPA

Lorna is Director and Founder of Freedom Activities CIC, providing inclusive sports and physical activity sessions in the community. She also works as a personal trainer and has been actively involved in the physical activity sector for the last 15 years. Lorna has a BA (Hons) in Sports Development and Coaching (2018) and an MSc in Adapted Sports (2022).

She is passionate about creating opportunities for people of any ability to be active together within a safe and fun environment. Through her work, Lorna has gained many years of experience helping people from a variety of backgrounds including those with long-term health issues and disabilities.

As a Lived Experience Advisory Board member with Every Body Moves, a programme within ParalympicsGB, Lorna has gained knowledge and experience of inclusive activities across the country.  Lorna supported the launch of an online hub, promoted by Channel 4 throughout the 2024 Paris Paralympics Games, that signposts disabled participants to find and access suitable physical activities.

 

Tracy
Tracy Levy MCIMSPA

As a group exercise instructor with 25 years of teaching experience, Tracy has a wealth of experience working within the industry as an exercise teacher, trustee/director, company secretary and class participant.

Tracy is a director at Margaret Morris Movement International and is their representative member at the Movement and Dance Division of the Sport and Recreation Alliance. As Chair of the division, she created the opportunity for, and steered key pieces of research that are now being used to show the impact that movement and dance is having within the sport and physical activity sector. 

Tracy teaches four community classes a week. She believes there is ‘something’ for everyone at all stages of life, and everyone should have the opportunity to experience good-quality physical activity.

Alicia
Alicia Wilson MCIMSPA

A group exercise practitioner for over seven years, Alicia has gained a wealth of challenging and rewarding experience working with individuals of all age groups and abilities, assisting them in initiating or maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle tailored to their specific needs.

Throughout her career, Alicia has always championed the value of connecting with fellow professionals and building support networks where collaborative learning and expertise can be shared with her peers. Alicia is a committed advocate of the positive impact that health and wellness programmes can have on the professionals who deliver them and the communities that they serve.

She plans to continue nurturing a culture of health and wellbeing in the sector as an elected trustee, focussing on forming new partnerships with health-related organisations and empowering community-based professionals to broaden the scope of their delivery.

Appointed Trustees

Magali Bruna

With over 20 years of global leadership experience across the aerospace and construction sectorsMagali Bruna is skilled in translating strategic vision into actionable plans. Using data-driven insights and her expertise in supply chain management, business integration and organisational change, she has delivered manylarge-scale cross-functional programmes over the course of her career.

In her current role as Head of the Project Support and Integration Office at Laing O’Rourke, Magali has brought her understanding of strategic transformation to build and mature the business’s project management capability.

Magali has previously been a board member of local organisations as well as a school governor and is an active volunteer with the Association for Project Management. Her connection to the sector comes from her decision to retrain in horse riding 15 years ago and finding it hard to find suitably trained professionals to help her. This translated to a wider concern of how to find skilled professionals in the sport and physical activity sector and led her to CIMSPA.

 

Catherine Dineley

Catherine Dineley has worked in the culture, behaviours and ethics space since 2011, with experience in major corporations such as BP and Lloyds Banking Group.

Her current role is as Head of Ethical Business Conduct for BAE Systems, where she leads the Ethical Business Conduct programme, engaging with senior stakeholders across the air sector to lead, review and refresh the group’s strategy for business ethics and shape its overall business conduct strategy and programme delivery.

In her previous positions, Catherine also led people change and culture transformation programmes, including an award-winning strategic value refresh and an ethical programme change across 60 countries.

Though not professionally connected to sport and physical activity, Catherine has always been a keen swimmer and also enjoys spectating as a parent.

 

Adrian
Adrian Gaveglia

Adrian is a CFO who specialises in scaling growth businesses across the Consumer, Tech and Media sectors. With over 20 years’ experience in Finance he is currently advising several fast growth businesses on their funding, growth strategies and business planning. Adrian is keen to bring this experience to help support CIMSPA’s growth plans and help implement its ambitious plans for its National Skills Academy.

John Harrison

John Harrison has worked in the sports sector for over 15 years, including roles at Sport England and Paralympics GB. Since 2022, he has been Sport Advisor at UK Sport, where he manages relationships with Olympic and Paralympic national governing bodies and supports Olympic and Paralympic cycle strategic investment planning.

Working directly with Chairs and CEOs on organisational health and development, he has also built up a wealth of experience across governance; board development; finance and risk management; equality, diversity and inclusion; social impact; people and leadership development; and international relations.

He was also the architect behind UK Sport’s Organisational Health Tool.

John is active participant in sport and plays hockey and cricket. He has coached, captained and volunteered on various boards and committees, including GB Disability Football Association and CP Sport’s Engagement and Insight Committee.

 

Paul Neale

Paul Neale is a chartered accountant and risk specialist, having spent 34 years in the City of London with companies including KPMG, NatWest Markets, JP Morgan, Macquarie Bank, RBS and Mizuho Financial Group.  During his career he has led audit, financial control, project management, non-financial risk teams and was head of a risk management department, responsible for ensuring the organisation identified, assessed, managed and monitored its risks.

Paul retired from full-time work in 2024 to spend more time with his family, supporting charities, volunteering, learning new skills and indulging in his love of travel, walking and sport as a keen endurance cyclist, runner and pickleball player.

Paul has been a member of CIMSPA’s Audit and Probity Committee since April 2019 and is also a Trustee and Treasurer of a small charity, Reverence for Life UK.

 
Matthew Vaughan

Matthew Vaughan is the Principal of Brighton MET and Haywards Heath colleges as well as leading on adult skills across the seven-strong Chichester College Group that teachers over 25,000 students and apprentices a year.

He has worked in education since 1989 across a range of roles from teaching, notably social sciences, to managing departments and occupying senior leadership positions in several college groups, including as Head of Learning and Skills for a large city local authority.  Matthew was also a senior Ofsted inspector for several years before returning to the further education sector.

Having consistently worked in, managed and led colleges that provide a range of curricula in sport and physical activity throughout his career, Matthew has collaborated with CIMSPA for a number of years before becoming a trustee.

Gavin
Gavin Stewart

Gavin Stewart has extensive experience in the financial services sector including 27 years working for financial services regulators.

Prior to his financial services career, Gavin competed internationally as a rower, participating in two Olympic Games.

Gavin has also worked in sports administration and been Chair of the BOA Athletes’ Commission and UK Sport’s Lottery Panel.

Gavin is also a writer having published a novel and numerous blogs and articles on financial services and regulation.
