CIMSPA statement on the Duty of Care Review report
CIMSPA has welcomed the findings of the recent Duty of Care Review independent working group, led by Tanni Grey-Thompson.
Commenting on the group’s report, Tara Dillon, CIMSPA CEO said: “This report is both timely and welcome and sets out clear recommendations for how sports should demonstrate an effective duty of care for all participants, from grassroots to elite.
“We welcome the specific ask made of CIMSPA in the review regarding ensuring that equality and diversity training is embedded into the sport and physical activity sector’s training pathways.
“CIMSPA skills development partners already offer courses that address safeguarding and diversity issues and which are fully endorsed by the chartered institute.
“Our Professional Development Board will work to ensure that the training pathways we are creating for the whole sector address the need for a robust duty of care for sporting participants.
“CIMSPA will continue to work with experts in the field, such as the NSPCC’s Child Protection in Sport Unit and the English Federation of Disability Sport, to ensure that our standards fully address the issues involved.
“CIMSPA also welcomes the recommendation that a register of licensed coaches should exist, and is already in discussions with relevant government agencies and other bodies to explore how such a register might function.
“What is important now is that the whole sector embraces the working group’s findings. ukactive have already pledged to review the report against their own code of practice, and the in-progress review of CIMSPA’s code of conduct for members will also take this report into account.”
