How the sector can support Ukrainians fleeing violence

We all want to do our bit to support those who’ve been displaced.

CIMSPA today has put together a list of resources that people working in sport and physical activity can use to help people who have fled the war in Ukraine. These resources, adapted from Sport England’s guidance, is specific and measurable. It will have a direct, positive impact on those who need it most.

“The events happening in Ukraine are shocking and disturbing.” says Tara Dillon, CEO at CIMSPA. “But, when people and businesses come together, we can help overcome the challenges ahead of us. I believe sport and physical activity can be a lifeline for many who have arrived in the UK. If you’re hosting refugees, encourage them to get involved in your sports group. Explore local green spaces. Offer to pay for a gym membership. Whatever is in your means.

“Together, we can help restore normality and get everyone who has fled the conflict involved in local, grassroots sport and physical activity.”

Simple ways to get involved:

You could host a fundraising event with your sports club and grassroots sports community to raise money for Ukraine. Here are some ideas.

Hosting a sporting event? Taking part in a competition? Show your support for Ukraine by wearing blue and yellow to #StandWithUkraine.

Working with children? Read the UN’s guide on ‘How to talk to children about the conflict in Ukraine’ here.

Take it a step further:

  • Host Ukrainian refugees. The government has launched Homes for Ukraine. City-dwellers can sign up for Refugees at Home, a UK run charity. There’s also Rooms for Refugees.
  • Donate essential supplies. Many charities and community groups will have lists of items they need.
  • Donate to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Appeal. Advice on donating money safely is available on the government website.
