Professional Standards central to how exercise and fitness workforce can support public health

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) has welcomed the recommendations made in “Going the Distance: Exercise professionals in the wider public health workforce” – a report published by the Royal Society for Public Health and ukactive.

The report outlines how the UK’s exercise professionals workforce can play an enhanced role in supporting the public’s health.

Commenting on the report, Tara Dillon, CIMSPA CEO said: “CIMSPA welcomes the report and applauds its ambitions to encourage our sector’s exercise and fitness employees to play a greater public health role through evidence-based, effective practice.

“The report’s identification that CIMSPA professional standards will be at the centre of achieving these ambitions demonstrates the significant potential of the employer-led framework we have created. It clearly articulates the opportunities for our sector’s employers to tackle some of the health inequality challenges society faces and the key role our workforce will play in addressing these.

“We look forward to working with the Royal Society for Public Health, ukactive and other partners to realise these goals.

“The challenge now is to fully understand the scope of the recommendations outlined in the report and work with our partners to ensure they are delivered. We will need to look beyond just the professional standards project – providing clear career pathways to ensure the whole workforce understands the opportunities for them to be the best they can be.”

The report also features case studies of public health outreach working already being delivered by CIMSPA partners Places for People Leisure, Nuffield Health, Everyone Active and Active Tameside. The research was supported by CIMSPA partners Technogym.
