Voluntary management of facilities on the agenda in Wales

The Welsh Government is considering developing a bespoke Welsh law to help communities bid for, own and run assets transferred from the public and private sectors, such as sports halls, churches, pubs and post offices.

This has been an important news story in Wales this week, with significant media attention, and CIMSPA Wales chair, Sally Church, gave her perspective in an interview with BBC Wales, stressing the need for proper professional support for any such voluntary schemes, to avoid the possibility of “setting them up to fail”.

Graham Williams, Director of Sport Development at Sport Wales, also commented on the idea: “Exploring ways to allow more local communities to take ownership of important local facilities is a positive step forward. There are already some really encouraging examples of where this has worked well for communities including the Swansea Tennis Centre”.

The consultation is now open and closes on 11 September 2015.
