Let’s Dance! The joy and benefits of dance-based exercise
CIMSPA Trustee and Group Exercise Practitioner Member Tracy Levy shares her thoughts on the upcoming Let’s Dance! campaign which aims to get more people active
Sometimes dreams become reality, and for us, your local dance and group exercise instructors, 2 March marks the beginning of a whirlwind week. Through our weekday dance-based exercise classes and special events, we will be showcasing the incredible benefits of movement for people of all ages and abilities.
We are thrilled to be joining forces with the inspiring Angela Rippon, who is leading the charge in encouraging everyone to embrace the joy and wellbeing that dance-inspired workouts can bring. Our goal is simple:
- Raise awareness of the benefits of dance-based exercise
- Make it easier than ever for people to get involved in a movement class, no matter what their level, age or experience
- Bring people together and help them to connect through group fitness
Why dance-based exercise?
As an exercise to music teacher, I am often asked: “Why dance-based exercise?” My response is always the same: Why go for a solitary walk around the park when you can join a dance fitness class, get your steps in, and move in a variety of patterns, often backwards (which is an incredibly useful everyday skill!), all while making friends in a supportive and sociable setting?
Similarly, why only work out alone in the gym when you could be part of a sociable exercise class with music, where movement is fun, engaging and adaptable to individual needs? Dance-based exercise classes often come with extra perks, like social events and Christmas parties, and are led by professional instructors who can tailor exercises without anyone even realising.
A style for everyone
One of the most wonderful things about dance-based exercise is its variety. There are hundreds of styles to choose from, catering to every interest and ability. Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone with prior experience, there’s a class for you. Some popular options include:
Zumba – a high-energy workout combining Latin dance with fitness.
Dance aerobics – a fun and rhythmic way to improve cardiovascular health.
Barre fitness – inspired by ballet, a low-impact workout for strength and flexibility.
Chair-based dance workouts – perfect for those with limited mobility who still want to enjoy movement and music.
Clubbercise – a dance workout with glow sticks and club-style music for an exciting atmosphere.
And then there are great examples of classes based on dance traditions from different cultures that bring communities together, like the brilliant Bhangra dance sessions led by CIMSPA partner BBX Fitness. The ‘Big Brummie Bhangrathon’ that they are leading on 2 March as part of Let’s Dance promises to be spectacular!
The key thing to remember is that this isn’t about striving for the Strictly Come Dancing Glitterball trophy. It’s about movement, health and wellbeing, and most importantly, enjoyment.
How to get involved
Let’s Dance is all about making dance-based exercise accessible to everyone, from teenagers to older adults. If you’re interested in joining in, look out for the Let’s Dance logo and follow these simple steps:
- Pick a style you like – there’s something for everyone!
- Check the teacher’s credentials – make sure they are insured and affiliated with a recognised professional development body like CIMSPA.
- Find a beginner’s class or free taster session – a great way to see if the style suits you.
- Chat to the instructor – they can help you find the right level and class for you.
- Pop along and give it a go – you might discover a new passion!
- Move, groove and feel great.
Dance-based exercise is more than just a workout; it’s an experience that boosts your mental and physical wellbeing, builds friendships and brings joy to your everyday life. No matter your age, background or ability, there is a class waiting for you.
So, why not step out of your comfort zone and give it a go? There is a dance-based exercise class for everyone, and everyone should have the opportunity to move and groove their way!
