Introducing Professional Status to the sport and physical activity sector

Introducing Professional Status to the sport and physical activity sector

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity will be introducing professional status to sport and physical activity professionals in September.

With approximately 600,000 roles, the sport and physical activity sector has an important role to play in society today – the physical and mental health and wellbeing of the population, social cohesion, community engagement and to the economic prosperity of our nation.

Launching in September 2025, current CIMSPA members will be issued with a professional status, with all sector professionals, including those who are not currently members, being invited to apply for these new titles. Professional status for the sport and physical activity workforce will ensure that professionals in the sector are professionally recognised by the public and allied sectors.

Sport and physical activity sector professionals will gain a clear, defined title, postnominal letters and digital assets to use to assure other professionals, employers, relevant sectors and the general public that they are skilled, trustworthy and ethical.

A professional status is earned through learning and experience, is issued by CIMSPA, and then it must be maintained through learning and skills development.

CIMSPA’s strategy, ‘Releasing the Power of Our Profession’, provides a framework to deliver professional recognition to sport and physical activity, with professional status sitting at the heart of it.

As a chartered professional body, CIMSPA is formally permitted to grant professional status to the sport and physical activity sector through the royal charter.

Spencer Moore, Chief Strategy Officer at CIMSPA said:

“Professional recognition, for both individuals and the sport and physical activity sector as a whole, is something we know the professionals in our workforce have been asking and waiting for, and I am delighted that we are able to introduce the professional status framework to our fantastic and hard-working sector.

“The sport and physical activity workforce deserve to be recognised for the great work that they do. Supporting our sector professionals to have their commitment and expertise recognised through their professional status will create a sense of pride and belonging.

“The professional status framework will support progression, allowing sector professionals to develop their career and ultimately gaining greater recognition in their careers.

“Enabling our workforce to gain the ability to earn a professional status will only further boost the impact that our sector has on the wellbeing and future prosperity of our nation.”

Recognition of prior learning

We are reminding and encouraging all members to ensure that their qualifications, learning and CPD are up to date on the Member Portal.

To retain their professional status, all CIMSPA members are required to complete learning and develop their knowledge every year, demonstrating their dedication to their profession and to show clients and employers that they are competent and fit to practice.
