Membership application FAQ

What are the benefits of membership?

Membership offers many opportunities, both face to face and online, for the development of professionals and aspiring professionals in the sport and physical activity sector. Membership enables you to access a wide range of tools to improve your own professional development. Becoming a part of both the UK’s network of sport and physical activity professionals and engaging at a local level, will allow you to engage with members with similar interests and share best practice.

How long will my application take to be processed?

Membership applications

  • Once your application is received and assessed, you will be awarded a grade of membership based on your experience and qualifications. Applicants will receive a response from CIMSPA within 28 days of receipt of the application, confirming their acceptance as a member or requesting further information.

Chartered membership applications

  • Those wishing to apply for chartered membership or fellowship should first apply for CIMSPA membership, and then start the chartership process.
  • Application for Chartered membership is a two-stage process. Applicants will receive a response to their stage one application within 14 days. Those who meet stage one requirements will be invited to submit a stage two evidence portfolio which will be assessed at the next meeting of the CIMSPA membership and disciplinary committee, held quarterly.

Who decides what membership category I am in?

CIMSPA's professional staff team.

I don't have the appropriate qualifications. Can I still be a chartered member or indeed a member?

CIMSPA is committed to offering routes into membership for ALL those working in sport and physical activity. For those new to the sector, our student and affiliate categories provide an ideal introduction to the Institute. From then, our continuing professional development programme will help you work towards a goal of chartered membership.

How do I appeal?

If you are unsuccessful or disagree with the membership award, you can appeal. You may request that your application is reassessed, by submitting your appeal in writing to CIMSPA detailing why you disagree and the provision of further supplementary evidence, if necessary.

Does my membership carry any liability?

As a member you have a joint interest in CIMSPA broadly equivalent to that of a shareholder in a limited company, and thus have both rights and responsibilities under the Statutes in relation to your membership. Summary details are included with your subscription renewal invoice and are available on the CIMSPA website HERE.

As a membership body we have a statutory duty to maintain a register of members including members’ contact details. Every member has a duty to ensure CIMSPA is notified of any changes in members’ names, home address and other contact details as they occur.
