The University of Brighton has been part of the city of Brighton and Hove since 1859 and Eastbourne since 1949.
Sport and exercise courses are offered by the School of Sport and Service Management, based on our Eastbourne campus. The school has built a reputation of which they, the local community, students and graduates are very proud. BA (Hons) Physical Education
Taught in Eastbourne alongside our other degrees in sport and exercise, this course enables you to gain a broad practical understanding of physical education, combined with the sport science and social-scientific aspects of PE and sport. Opportunities are offered to explore areas of personal interest in depth, creating a flexible degree that can prepare you for a range of careers. Underpinned by the examination of how learning occurs, concepts specific to physical education are explored: how do we acquire physical literacy; how do we engage with and experience physical activity cognitively, emotionally and socially; what role is played by culture, environment and politics?
BSc (Hons) Sport Business Management
Our Sport Business Management BSc(Hons) enables people who are passionate about sport to develop the experience, management and leadership skills required for career success in this expanding and varied sector. Your learning will focus on the application of business principles in sport. In your second year you will gain valuable real-world experience and enhance your CV with a placement with one of our partners. Combining practical experience with academic study equips you with a broad understanding of the international and commercial aspects of the business of sport.
BA (Hons) top-up degree Sport Coaching and Development
This course is for students who want to extend their vocational skills and specialist knowledge in the growing field of sport coaching and development. The course is designed to prepare you for careers across the sport and fitness sectors, giving you both the academic knowledge and vocational skills to work at the forefront of the field. Our teaching methods include lectures, laboratory work, practical coaching, seminars and tutorials. The mixture of core and optional modules allow you to study both central themes and areas of personal interest. A work placement later in the year enables you to gain practical experience in a professional setting.
BA (Hons) Sport Studies
The Sport Studies BA(Hons) enables you to explore critical issues in the world of contemporary sport, exploring topics such as global sports leadership, the relationship between sport and the media, international and community-level sport development, sports business, and physical education. You will also take part in the university’s award-winning Football for Peace programme and achieve a standalone qualification in Sports and International Development alongside your degree. This course offers a specialist pathway: Sport Studies with Physical Education BA(Hons). You can choose to follow this pathway at the end of your first year if you wish.
BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
This course is one the best-established degrees in sport science in the UK and retains a leading reputation for its innovative approach to learning and provision of resources and facilities. The course and the laboratories you will use are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and include a thermal chamber, physiology labs, biochemical analysis labs, an altitude chamber and a biomechanics laboratory. You’ll graduate with expert knowledge of the effects of sport and exercise on the human body. You can choose to complete a period of professional experience in year 3 with one of our partners, including top teams and international sports initiatives, as well as local organisations. Depending on option modules chosen, you will graduate with Sport and Exercise Science BSc (Hons) or one of the following awards:

BSc (Hons) top-up degree Sport and Fitness
Our Sport and Fitness top-up degree is a springboard for careers in coaching, health promotion, fitness assessment and beyond. It builds on relevant foundation degrees or Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) and focuses on the application of science to vocational settings. You will choose options allowing you to specialise in areas such as physiology, nutrition and performance analysis. There are also practical sports modules for those interested in physical education. As part of the course, you take an extended work placement that allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge and gain professional experience. Teaching a balance of knowledge and skill, the Sports and Fitness BSc (Hons) is perfect if you're looking to speed up your career development and make headway into the industry.
BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching
This course helps you to develop the knowledge, practical skills and experience needed for a professional career in sport and fitness coaching. You will explore sport coaching theories and their application to practice in areas such as physiology, psychology, biomechanics and sociology. You will also consider how sport coaching is used as a development tool around the world. Optional modules encourage you to learn about specialist topics such as performance analysis and nutrition, which you can choose to investigate further in your final-year dissertation. Work placements in years 2 and 3 allow you to gain practical coaching experience in different sports, settings and scenarios. There are also opportunities to develop your skills in cardiac rehabilitation, the strength and conditioning of elite athletes and in coaching of specific sports including football, athletics and basketball.
MA Sport and International Development
This MA programme is dedicated to the study of sport as a tool for international development. It considers the ways in which sport can be used to tackle a range of social welfare issues, and how development has come about through sport policy worldwide. A particular focus of the course is on the evolving role of sport in the field of international development and this is brought to life by practical work with INGOs. It considers the conceptual and ideological dimensions of this rapidly expanding sector, and looks to evaluate those action-based interventions that aim to address inequalities and ameliorate conflict in seriously divided societies.
MSc Applied Exercise Physiology
This course will suit you if you are a sport and exercise graduate, a graduate from a related science or a medical student looking to specialise in the field of exercise physiology.
It is designed to focus on professional skills that improve your employability, as you learn with equipment including environmental chambers, breath-by-breath analysers, blood sampling analysers and transcranial magnetic stimulation devices.
You also again gain real-world experience in areas relevant to your interests by working alongside experienced practitioners. Past projects have included working with participants in our cardiac rehabilitation programme.
Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.

This course will suit you if you are a sport and exercise graduate, a graduate from a related science or a medical student looking to specialise in the field of sport physiology. It is designed to focus on professional skills that improve your employability, as you learn with state-of-the-art equipment including environmental chambers, breath-by-breath analysers, blood sampling analysers and transcranial magnetic stimulation devices. You also gain real-world experience in areas relevant to your interests by working alongside experienced practitioners. Past projects have included the design of individualised training programmes leading up to the Brighton Marathon and the physiological testing of elite athletes.Our teaching laboratories are accredited by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), as are most of our course staff. You can register on the BASES Supervised Experience Scheme yourself to achieve personal accreditation.
