BA (Hons) Health and Fitness Management
This bespoke and industry focused course is specifically designed for the health and fitness industry. From exercise instruction and fitness technology to operations management and strategic marketing; this course prepares students for a career in one of the world's fastest growing sectors.
Gaining real-world experience is key to the course. To build upon the knowledge gained while studying for their degree, students are required to undertake a four-week work experience placement. This will expose them to a real life working environment, whether it be with a large fitness operator, small independent club, local authority, budget gym operator or other organisation.
Students have the opportunity to be a part of the Solent PT initiative, working for an extended with external clients and Solent university staff. Involvement in the initiative begins in the second year and progresses through to the final year of study. At this stage, students are expected to produce their own business and marketing plan to target and recruit clients with goals that match their specific areas of training expertise and interest. To support the academic units delivered within the degree, students will have the opportunity to hear from a range of guest speakers from the health and fitness industry, some of whom are graduates from Solent’s health and exercise sciences programme.
Students are taught by a wide range of specialists who have extensive health and fitness industry and/or personal training experience.
BA Sport Coaching and Sport Development
On Solent’s Sport Coaching and Sport Development degree students develop knowledge and skills for a successful career in the future sport, health and physical activity sector. The course combines the study of sport coaching and sport development with practical project management skills, placements and the coaching innovation programme to prepare students for graduate-level roles in the sports and physical activity sector.
Students on the degree build a strong grounding in the principles of coaching and explore areas such as sociology, management, sport policy and sport development. Students will be encouraged to put this into practice through work placement and volunteering opportunities with one of our many local partners.
All students on the course are involved in the unique Coaching Innovation Programme where students work alongside industry practitioners to research, deliver and evaluate a local community project using sport for social change. This is a two year process which commences in the second year of study (Level 5) and ends in the third year (Level 6). This initiative offers valuable industry experience to students and is unique to Solent University.
BA Sport Management
Solent University's industry-focused sport management degree enables students to develop the skills required to successfully manage and lead a variety of sports, events, organisations and people.
This degree focuses on the business and management of the sports industry. Students study a combination of management, policy and sociology units, developing a thorough and critical understanding of sport management issues and theory. With employability at its core, the course enables students to develop practical and professional skills through a four-week work placement unit.
The course team have established industry links which have provided previous students with the opportunity for valuable industry work experience and develop the knowledge and skills for a career in sport management sector.
BSc Fitness and Personal Training
Solent University's fitness and personal training degree provides students with the necessary skills and knowledge needed to make an impact in this growing industry.
This practical, career-focused course combines the latest in evidence-based training methods with high-level industry qualifications. Clearly defined pathway options in one of three specialist areas – exercise referral, soft tissue therapy and strength and conditioning - are aimed at producing fitness professionals with higher level skills required to positively impact peoples’ lives.
Gaining real-world experience is integral to the course. Through the Solent PT scheme, students work with a member of the University’s staff for 15 weeks in their second year, putting together a personal training programme and working with them to achieve their fitness goals. This is repeated in the final year, where students work with two clients – one will have different goals to their previous client, and the other has to be recruited by the student through their own marketing initiative.
Students have access to the University’s purpose-built teaching gym and use industry-standard equipment for the practical elements of their course. Physiology, biomechanics and psychology laboratories are also available for student use.
BSc Sport Performance Coaching
Solent University's Sport Performance Coaching degree will help you to better understand the principles of sport science alongside developing the highly practical skills required for a career coaching athletes.
Students on the degree study relevant and applied theory - sports science and nutrition, coaching principles, skills development, sports psychology, strength and conditioning, and performance and technique analysis - building essential underpinning knowledge for a career in coaching. This is combined with practical training and professional placement opportunities, giving students the chance to put theory into practice.
Work placements are integral to the course. First year students are provided with a placement with the Saints Foundation, Southampton FC’s community-based charity. During their second year, students deliver coaching sessions at local schools, arranged by the course team through our partnership with the school sport partnership.
