The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston was founded in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. Since those early days it has grown into one of the UK’s largest universities with a staff and student community approaching 38,000 and an employment-focused course portfolio containing some 400 undergraduate programmes and over 200 postgraduate courses. The University has an established research reputation with world-leading or internationally excellent work taking place. As a truly global institution UCLan’s student body includes 120 nationalities and its partnership network extends to 125 countries. In 2010, the University became the first UK modern Higher Education institution to appear in the QS World University Rankings. In 2016, the Centre for World University Rankings estimated Central Lancashire to be in the top 3.7 percent of all worldwide universities, highlighting the progress the institution has made in providing students with real-world learning experiences and reflecting the institution’s broad pool of academic talent. The University has a strong focus on continually improving the student experience and has invested nearly £100 million in the last five years on new buildings and facilities to support teaching, learning and leisure activities. BA (Hons) Outdoor Adventure Leadership
This unique course offers the opportunity for individuals with any level of experience in outdoor leadership and adventure sport coaching to engage with academic study in a student centred way.

Students will learn amongst other practitioners in the industry, allowing the sharing of ideas and development of a new community of practice. Students learn from teaching staff who are experts in their field, actively involved in research and committed to professional development in both their applied and theoretical disciplines.

Students will gain an advanced understanding of the practical, theoretical and contemporary issues within adventure sport and outdoor leadership, whilst developing the necessary practical skills on five week-long residentials at an outdoor teaching centre. To further boost employability the course is designed to encourage work experience during the summer and there are national and international expedition opportunities.

By studying this course, students have the chance to gain industry-required National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications via a structured enhancement programme.

BA (Hons) Sport and Physical Education
This unique course combines the more practical study of physical education and human movement with the theoretical examination of sport from a socio-cultural viewpoint. This degree has been designed to provide the student with an intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant programme, with the aim of producing knowledgeable and skilful graduates in the field of Sport and Physical Education.

The curriculum emphasises the development of skills and knowledge that will help further academic and subsequent employment. Students will extend their knowledge and skills in a range of activities through integrated practical experiences, as well as work placement and international opportunities.

A research project in the final year allows students to integrate their knowledge and skills in an area of specific interest. With each area being taught by specialist expert staff, this programme gives all students the opportunity to gain skills that will give them an excellent platform for employment.

BA (Hons) Sports Coaching and Development
This degree has been designed to provide an intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant programme for those interested in sports coaching as it relates to community and school development environments.

Students will examine sports coaching from a range of perspectives, linking theory and practice while drawing on contemporary research and issues in sports coaching and development including developing communities through sport, school sport, physical activity and health, reflective practice and talent development.

This is a truly multi-disciplinary course, taught by specialists in each field and draws upon industry expertise in schools, sports development, NGBs, county sport partnerships and local authorities. The programme is supported by our Institute of Coaching and Performance (ICaP) and its world renowned practitioners and consultants.

The programme is aligned to the professional accreditation body Sports Coach UK allowing students to graduate with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to become an effective coach, development officer and leader in the sports sector.

BSc (Hons) Nutrition and Exercise Sciences
This degree has been designed to provide an intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant programme for those interested in nutrition and exercise sciences as it relates to health.

Sedentary lifestyles and poor nutrition can cause diseases that place an enormous burden on the individual and society as a whole. The importance of achieving and maintaining a good level of health and nutrient intake is receiving greater recognition from employers, the government and the general public.

Graduates who have a detailed understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic disease can provide effective recommendations to prevent/delay the onset of disease with exercise and nutritional intervention programmes. This course equips students with the knowledge and skills required for promoting the health of the general public, clients with risk factors or patients who already suffer from a disease.

This is a truly multi-disciplinary course, taught by specialists in each field. The provision of two strands aligned to professional accreditation bodies such as the Association for Nutrition and the Register of Exercise Professionals allows students to specialise in nutrition and food science or health and fitness.

BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
Sport and Exercise Science emerged as an academic area within a developing body of knowledge that encompasses the parent disciplines of Physiology, Psychology and Biomechanics, along with additional sub-disciplines of Sport Nutrition and Performance Analysis. This programme adopts a multi-disciplinary approach with the aim of producing knowledgeable and skilful graduates in the field of Sport and Exercise Science.

This degree has been designed to provide an intellectually stimulating and vocationally relevant programme if you are interested in business management as it relates to sport.

Students examine sports business management from a range of perspectives, linking theory and practice while drawing on contemporary research and issues in sports business, including sustainability, globalisation, corporate social responsibility and corruption. At the same time, students will learn the core business management disciplines - including management, finance, strategy, operations and economics – and their application to sport.

This is a truly multi-disciplinary course, taught by specialists in each field. The programme is aligned to the professional accreditation body The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA) allowing students to graduate with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to become an effective leader and manager in the sports sector.

BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching and Performance
