Frequently Asked Questions
I hold an overseas qualification that is not recognised by CIMSPA, can I still access membership??
UK Qualifications / Degrees
For qualifications issued in the UK that are not currently recognised by CIMSPA, we will need to ascertain whether your qualification maps to professional standards before accepting it for entry into membership. When you apply for membership with a non-regonised qualification, our membership and eduaction team will complete a mapping exercise and let you know the outcome. If successful, the qualification will be added to the appropriate accepted entry qualifications list.
European Qualifications / Degrees (excluding ROI)
If you hold a European exercise and fitness qualification that is not currently recognised by CIMSPA, you must first join EREPS (European Register of Exercise Professionals). EREPS membership validates the qualification you hold against UK standards and allows entry into CIMSPA membership. To join EREPS, please visit http://ereps.eu/
Once your qualification has been assessed by EREPs and you have joined their membership, please upload your EREPS membership certificate and details of the qualification you hold to your membership application. Our membership team will then be able to add your qualification to the list of CIMSPA approved qualifications.
Overseas Qualifications / Degrees (Non-European & ROI)
For overseas exercise and fitness qualifications that are not recognised by CIMSPA, we need to collect some further information from you to assess your eligibility for membership.
If you hold a qualification from one of the following countries, you need to contact the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) authority in that country and request a ‘letter of portability’.
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- United Arab Emirates (UAE)
- Republic of Ireland (ROI)
This letter will confirm that your qualification is ‘portable’ to other countries and allow access into CIMSPA membership. Once you have obtained the letter of portability, simply upload it to your application along with a copy of your qualification. Our membership team will then add your qualification to the list of approved entry qualifications.
For qualifications issued from other countries not listed above, we will need to ascertain whether your qualification maps to professional standards before accepting it for entry into membership. When you apply for membership with a non-recogonised qualification, our membership and education team will complete a mapping exercise and let you know the outcome. If successful, the qualification will be added to the appropriate accepted entry qualifications list.
I hold a recognised qualification; however, it is older than five years and I have not completed any CPD, can I still access membership?
CIMSPA will accept a signed statement of competence declaration from your employer in lieu of CPD evidence for entry into membership. Once in membership, you will be required to adhere to CIMSPA’s annual CPD policy.
You can download a copy of the statement of competence by clicking here (opens in new window) or by contacting email@example.com. Please note that the CIMSPA template must be used and other documents will not be accepted.
Once you have obtained your signed statement of competence, please upload it to your membership application.
I have Yoga / Pilates / Tai Chi certificate that is not on one of the approved lists, can I still access membership?
If you do not hold a qualification that is currently recognised by CIMSPA, you will need to provide a letter of support issued directly from your training provider / school / guru in support of your training/qualification. The letter must state, your training lasted a minimum of 200 hours with 160 hours of direct contact with your mentors/trainer and included the following elements:
• Safety and care

Once you have obtained a letter of support from your training provider / school / guru, please upload it to your application. Our membership team will then review the content and if successful, your training/qualification will be added to the list of qualifications that allow access to membership.
