BSc Sports Coaching and Development

The Sports Coaching and Development degree will prepare you to work in a multitude of coaching, teaching and development roles.

You will gain experience of working in the sports industry, either with a sports development organisation, a social enterprise, community club or primary / secondary school and have the chance to gain industry-recognised coaching qualifications.

Through placements, you’ll gain an understanding of the changing nature of sports development from grass roots community projects that engage people to take up sport to working with elite athletes at the top of their game.

There are two study options: on campus, based at our USW Sport Park, or a blended learning route for students who are currently working in a sport setting.

BSc Sport and Exercise Science

Our British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) accredited Sport and Exercise Science degree has a high employability rate and offers many varied career options for graduates, from teaching and coaching to strength and conditioning and research.

You will learn about the physiological, biomechanical and psychological factors that govern elite performance, as well as the effect exercise has on human health and disease. During your studies, you will also develop industry relevant practical skills that are needed to work as a sport and exercise scientist, so you can expect to spend much of your study time in our state-of-the-art physiology, nutrition and biomechanics laboratories.

By choosing this course, you will also get the unique opportunity to work in our environmental chamber, where you will assess the effect that extreme conditions (warm, cold and high-altitude) have on athletic performance and how the body adapts to cope with these environments.

BSc Rugby Coaching and PERFORMANCE

Do you want to turn your passion for rugby into a rewarding career? An ever-increasing workforce of skilled professionals is needed to help rugby players reach their full potential. Strength and conditioning, coaching and performance, fitness testing, team and player analysis, nutrition and psychology are all becoming vital to performance.

This rugby coaching course offers a unique opportunity to work towards industry-recognised World Rugby/Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) rugby coaching awards. This means you can be confident you’ll graduate with enhanced employment prospects in the field.

This rugby coaching degree course is supported by the WRU and professional rugby regions in Wales. It has been designed in consultation with WRU Coach Education Managers, Cardiff Blues, Dragons, Scarlets, and Ospreys coach educators, Hudl Performance Analytics experts, and United Kingdom Strength and Conditioning Association (UKSCA) strength and conditioning experts, and many of these staff contribute to the course.

You can work towards your Rugby Union Level 1 and 2 Children’s and Senior UKCC/WRU Rugby Coaching awards, Level 1 and 2 Refereeing qualifications, and gain relevant experience within Performance Analysis and Strength and Conditioning modules, which provide experience of working in those areas.

BSc Football Coaching and Performance

Football is a fast-growing industry that needs specialist professionals. This football coaching degree will give you the skills, experience and contacts to help gain employment in the football industry, whether as a coach, performance analyst, or as a member of sport science support staff.

We have designed our football coaching course content with a number of professional clubs, including Swansea City AFC, Cardiff City FC, and the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Trust, to identify the skills and qualities needed to work in the professional football industry. This input means you’ll get the opportunity to learn on a daily basis from well-qualified football coaches and UEFA coach educators, some of whom work at an international level.

One of a number of FAW courses we offer, this football coaching course combines a football-specific qualification with the opportunity to apply your knowledge in industry through our excellent placement opportunities, also available in the USA. You can develop a coaching profile and work towards your FAW C Certificate and FAW/UEFA B license. 

You’ll study in world-class facilities and conduct most of your work at USW Sport Park, which is designed to support a high- performance coaching environment.

BSc Strength and Conditioning

USW's strength and conditioning course is designed, written and delivered by internationally renowned industry professionals.

Strength and conditioning coaches need a unique mix of scientific knowledge, practical expertise and coaching experience. This strength and conditioning course directly addresses all of these requirements.

It offers opportunities for extensive practical experience and is endorsed by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) via its ERP programme. 

You’ll learn practical skills in our state-of-the-art-facility at USW Sport Park, using the same tools and equipment used to train and assess professional athletes.

You could also become part of the University’s coaching team, delivering strength and conditioning to its many sport teams and athletes, gaining valuable coaching experience.
