New analysis published in The Lancet shows that over half of adults around the world are predicted to be obese or overweight by 2050
The report also shows that a third of young people and children will fall into the same categories.
Commenting on the report, Tara Dillon, CEO of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) said,
“The vital role that physical activity has in preventing obesity and maintaining good health and wellbeing simply cannot be overstated. This new research which shows that half of the world’s population will be obese inside 25 years is terrifying given the huge pressures that it will place on health services and the impact on life expectancy. Whilst individual countries face their own challenges in relation to nutrition and lifestyle, there is one common factor which must not be ignored – regular physical activity. Exercise helps to regulate body weight by burning calories, improving metabolism, and supporting muscle development, which in turn enhances the body’s ability to manage fat stores effectively. Beyond weight management, physical activity has a multitude of other benefits, including improving cardiovascular health, strengthening bones and muscles, and reducing the risk of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.
In addition to its physical benefits, regular movement has a massive impact on mental health, helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting self-esteem and overall wellbeing. Encouraging people of all ages, wherever they live, to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines – whether through structured exercise, active commuting, or simply moving more throughout the day – is essential in addressing rising obesity rates and creating a healthier, happier society.
To achieve this, it is vital to have a professionally recognised physical activity workforce that is equipped with the skills and expertise to support individuals in leading more active lives. Qualified professionals, such as fitness instructors, personal trainers, and exercise specialists, play a crucial role in providing safe, effective, and tailored guidance that meets the diverse needs of the population. Investing in training which aligns with professional standards, and ongoing development within the sector ensures that participants receive high-quality support, helping to maximise the benefits of physical activity and drive long-term behaviour change at both an individual and societal level.”
