Training Academy Course of the Week – Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course

This Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work courses cover the syllabus required by the HSE, including CPR and the safe use of an AED.

No previous first aid experience is required to attend this course and upon completion learners will receive an ‘ITC Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work’ certificate. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

There are no written exam papers, the course assessment is 100% practical. Learners must take a full and active part in practising all of the procedures and protocols taught as this provides the trainer with the necessary continual assessment opportunities.

Course content

  • Vital Signs – breathing, level of consciousness, temperature, colour.
  • Incident Management – a systematic approach to managing first aid incidents safely, promptly and effectively.
  • Airway Management – causes and treatment of unconscious collapse.
  • Seizures
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Breathing Problems – administering first aid to a casualty who is choking.
  • Circulation Problems – controlling external bleeding and treatment for shock.
  • Minor Injuries – small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters.
  • Safe best practice – minimise the risk of infection and prevent cross infection.
  • Record keeping – the need for recording incidents and actions, RIDDOR, First Aid kits and use of available equipment.
  • Awareness of current regulations.
