Course structure
Unit 1 – provides an overview, tailoring key elements to the context of school holiday childcare, focusing on effective communication, child development, and safeguarding.
Unit 2 – delves into communication, emphasising its significance for understanding, relationship-building, and problem-solving. Various communication methods and tips for active listening are covered, alongside addressing potential barriers like special educational needs and language differences.
Unit 3 – focuses on child development, emphasising understanding stages from infancy to adolescence for planning inclusive activities. Piaget’s cognitive stages and practical tips for engagement and behaviour management are introduced, stressing adaptation to individual needs.
Unit 4 – discusses key safeguarding information from ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’, emphasising the need for following safeguarding policies, procedures, and DBS certification when working with children.
Unit 5 – emphasises school holiday child care safety, covering personal safety, signing in/out policies, risk assessments, equipment safety, and first aid. The importance of teamwork and positive behaviour management for creating a safe and inclusive environment is stressed.
Unit 6 – concludes the course by revisiting content and offering guidance on further CPD.
