Looking at the past to support the future

Almost one year on from taking over the guardianship of the Sports Leisure Legacy website, CIMSPA continues to recognise the importance of learning from our past to help create a vibrant and inclusive sport and physical activity sector for the future

The Sport Leisure Legacy website project was conceived back in 2013 by Gerry Carver FCIMSPA (Chartered), founder of L&R International and a former centre manager and leisure director, working with an editorial group of those who were part of this story. It’s aim was to document the history of public sport and recreation facilities in the UK.

Last year, CIMSPA took over responsibility for the Sports Leisure Legacy website – a comprehensive and authoritative guide to this story, providing a vital resource for anyone interested in or researching the history of today’s modern sector.

The project’s narrative chronicles key milestones in the creation of sport, leisure and recreation facilities, the recreation management profession this initiated, and how these early leaders opened up decades of sport and recreation facility development across the UK.

Commenting on the project, and its continued guardianship by CIMSPA, Gerry Carver said:

“The website tells a full and expansive story and provides contemporary evidence for future generations. It is a mine of information.

“The extraordinary pathway of centres over six decades can provide indicators on developing and managing centres in the future, facing challenges and creating different ways to meet changing public needs and demands. The website is also the professional genealogy of CIMSPA itself.”
