Workshop speaker – From Inactive to Empowered - Changing Lives
Inclusive Participation
Charmain began her journey in community development with a strong commitment to lived experience and systemic change. She joined Buckinghamshire New University as Community Engagement Officer in 2023, where she has focused on connecting with communities to strengthen institutional links, develop referral pathways, and support programmes that drive meaningful impact across the health, education, and civic sectors.
Her work is deeply rooted in personal experience, including the loss of her sister to addiction, a moment that ignited her drive to challenge inequalities and reimagine how systems support those most often overlooked. Alongside her professional roles, Charmain has worked in prisons and children’s homes, experiences that continue to shape her values of compassion, dignity, and equity. They’ve taught her the importance of listening without judgement, creating space for healing, and working with integrity, especially where hope feels hardest to reach.
She has contributed to initiatives that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, designed tools that track community impact, and championed inclusive approaches shaped by real-life experiences. Her work is driven by hope, and a belief that change begins with listening, collaboration, and bold action.
