Lewis embodies the transformative power of exercise in addiction recovery. Confronted with a doctor’s warning of just two months to live due to alcoholism, Lewis undertook a community-based detox in November. Seeking a positive outlet during recovery, he turned to running, continuing up to the London Marathon in April. This journey not only restored his physical health but also demonstrated the profound impact of exercise on mental well-being.
Scientific insights reveal that physical activity, especially in nature, releases neurotransmitters like dopamine, enhancing mood and reducing cravings. These benefits, paired with peer support and guidance from those with lived experience, create a strong foundation for lasting recovery.
Inspired by these discoveries, Lewis volunteered at the local NHS drugs and alcohol service, leading initiatives like a hike around the Isle of Wight with fellow recovering addicts and organising dragon boat racing events. These activities bring joy and camaraderie, integrating fun into the recovery process.
Through the Phoenix Lifestyle Foundation, Lewis crafts programmes that blend exercise, nature immersion, and peer support. As a biomechanics and recovery coach, he focuses on holistic healing approaches that build resilience and community.
His commitment to fostering change extends to speaking engagements at the House of Commons and involvement in Dame Carol Black’s national drug and alcohol policy steering group. Through Phoenix Lifestyle, Lewis supports and inspires others to demonstrate that with the right approach, anyone can overcome adversity and thrive.
