Bases and CIMSPA agree partnership on professional standards and degree endorsement

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is pleased to announce an important new partnership with the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES).

CIMSPA is the chartered professional body for the sport and physical activity sector and BASES is the professional membership organisation that represents sport and exercise sciences in the UK.

At the centre of the partnership is a commitment that the two organisations will collaborate on areas of common interest to ensure that newly developed career pathways and professional standards are aligned to the needs of employers, employees and the wider sport and physical activity sector.

The two organisations share a goal of creating a more standardised approach to higher education (HE) course endorsement, aligned to agreed professional standards, to provide clarity and confidence to the HE sector.

For a selection of occupations in the field of sport and exercise science, CIMSPA will recognise the BASES undergraduate endorsement scheme (BUES) within the CIMSPA Professional Standards Matrix. CIMSPA will also consult and collaborate with BASES in all areas of its work with the higher education sector.

BASES will align its exercise practitioner accreditation in line with new professional standards currently under consultation with key industry stakeholders, contribute to the overall standards development project and encourage its networks to engage in the adoption and implementation of professional standards for the sport and physical activity sector.

Speaking about the partnership, Tara Dillon, CIMSPA CEO said: “I’m very pleased that CIMSPA will be moving forwards in partnership with BASES – their expertise in sport and exercise science is well-respected throughout the education world.

“By working together we will be able to offer the UK higher education sector complete clarity as to how CIMSPA and BASES’ degree endorsement products will work in the real-world.”

Dr Keith Tolfrey, Chair of BASES, also commented: “BASES is pleased to be working alongside CIMSPA to support the development of professional standards for the sport and physical activity sector.

“With over thirty years’ experience of developing and implementing professional standards in sport and exercise science, BASES recognises the importance of collaboration between key stakeholders in the sector to ensure that our collective expertise is utilised to deliver tangible benefits to employers, employees, higher education institutions and the wider sector.”
