CIMSPA publishes new Delivering sport and physical activity online policy

Helping independent practitioners to safely deliver sport and physical activity sessions online

  • CIMSPA, working with sector partners, has developed a new policy to ensure the continued safe delivery of sport and physical activity online
  • Designed to support individual and independent practitioners across the UK
  • Covers live-streamed, pre-recorded, private and open sessions

The use of online and digital platforms has been a valuable resource for sport and physical activity practitioners for some time, and has accelerated during Covid-19, allowing many to continue to deliver sessions, despite the restrictions. The benefits to customers are also clear, with online delivery being an affordable and convenient way to maintain participation and promote overall health and wellbeing.

With this increased use of online platforms, there are many factors to consider in ensuring the continued safety of both participants and practitioners. Following a consultation with the sector, and with support from partners across the sector, CIMSPA has created its first UK-wide policy for delivering sport and physical activity online

The policy

The policy, created with input from Active Partnerships, EMD UK, ukactive and UK Coaching, is designed to support individual practitioners in ensuring the safe delivery of sport and physical activity services online.

The new policy covers live, pre-recorded, private and publicly available sessions for new and existing participants, and gives clear guidance to practitioners in areas including:

  • Being qualified to deliver the activity
  • Insurance
  • Risk assessment and participant disclaimers
  • Ensuring safety of participants and practitioners
  • Safeguarding
  • Music licensing

Who is the policy for?

The delivering sport and physical activity online policy is designed to support all sport and physical activity practitioners (LINK TO SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PAGE WITH MEMBERSHIP) participating in a role which requires a technical qualification, who are currently delivering or planning to deliver content through an online platform.

It only applies to individual practitioners operating in the United Kingdom. Those working within or on behalf or an organisation should consult that organisation’s internal policies.
