CIMSPA seeks clarity on latest Government guidance on outdoor exercise

We are working, together with others in the sector, to gain further clarity on the Government’s latest guidance relating to outdoor sport and exercise.

The Prime Minister last night announced that, from Wednesday 13 May, people in England will be allowed to go outside more than once a day for exercise, provided they follow social distancing guidelines and do so alone or with members of their own household. The Government has also indicated that people may meet up with a family member or friend while outdoors, while staying 2 metres apart.

Tara Dillon, CIMSPA CEO, said,

“We welcome the Government’s decision to allow people more scope to exercise outdoors and await further detail in the report to be issued this afternoon. Exercise and keeping fit is vitally important for everyone’s overall wellbeing, especially during this crisis. We are working with others, including Sport England, to clarify what this guidance means for the sector, especially in relation to outdoor training. As soon as we have more information we will make it available through our social media channels and Stronger Together website hub.”

CIMSPA has already contributed to a sector-wide operational framework (published by ukactive on 7 May) for gyms, leisure centres and the wider fitness industry in the UK, to help them to safely reopen once they are permitted to do so by the Government.

In line with this framework, CIMSPA will shortly be publishing a range of other resources, developed with its partners, to help the sector to reopen safely and effectively, when the time is right. These resources will be published shortly on the CIMSPA Stronger Together website hub, where you can also find helpful guidance, policies, health and wellbeing support and resources to help you develop yourself during lockdown.
