Your management pathway to recognition and status

A new route into CIMSPA management membership promises to be more accessible and inclusive for a management career in the sport and physical activity sector.

Are you a manager? Are you looking to gain recognition and status in our sector? CIMSPA’s overhauled management membership promises a clear route through the sector.

CIMSPA is excited to announce a new application process for our management membership that will be presented on the 27 February at the CIMSPA and Quest NBS conference 2020.

In preparation for the session and the conference, we explore the importance of creating an inclusive and accessible route to CIMSPA management membership. We will analyse the new changes it will have on the sport and physical activity sector’s workforce and employers.

Recognising leading managers in sport and physical activity

CIMSPA’s management membership is exclusive to individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to fulfil their roles, meet professional standards and can evidence their professionalism in the sport and physical activity sector. Those that are eligible for CIMSPA management membership are recognised by sector leaders, employers and the most dedicated of practitioners for their commitment to furthering themselves and the sector.

The impact of competent management extends further than just those managing. It reaches towards the employer, those being managed and those being serviced.

For aspiring, current and sector-leading managers

CIMSPA’s management membership offers a status that reflects their competence in skills and personal development at managing a workforce, an organisation or projects. Backed by the CIMSPA shield of quality and professional standards this status acts to represent a ‘gold standard’ of a manager’s ability in our sector.

For employers

Employers will be able to understand exactly what a management member skill set includes and what experience they have. This simplifies the recruitment process and emphasises the necessary skills in assessing “team fit”.

For those being managed

For those working under a manager that has dedicated themselves to furthering their skills could benefit lower staff as they encourage best practice, and operate in a regulated and informed environment. Staff can easily understand their manager’s skill and knowledge as backed by the sector’s professional body.

You’ll be able to join or continue with any organisation knowing your manager has the full confidence of the sport and physical activity sector’s professional body.

For those being serviced

An inclusive workforce alongside fully accessible managers will give the public increased confidence in a professional, respectable sector. The manager’s continuing professional development (CPD) involves a broader aspect, such as certain competencies mapping to CIMSPA’s professional standards. It’s these professional standards, and the wider professionalisation of the workforce, that will ensure managers are suitable for those being service.

A revamped application process for CIMSPA management membership

Previously, the workforce only had one route into management membership. This was largely weighted towards a written application and documentation. CIMSPA recognised that for some of our sector professionals this application process failed to appeal and cater to their skill set, and in response to sector feedback, we have reviewed our CIMSPA management membership pathway.

CIMSPA now offers different routes for managers to gain recognition making it more accessible than ever before. Before, specific criteria could inhibit opportunities for managers to be recognised whereas now, evidence can be gained in a variety of ways to support applications at different levels.

The new management standards now gives people in management the ability to recognition their level of competence, skill and relevant experience from the early stages of their career onwards:

Aspiring Manager Qualification (AMQ): Individuals employed in sport or physical activity who do not currently have management responsibilities yet do have aspirations to fulfil management responsibilities in the future.

Entry Level Manager Qualification (EMQ): Individuals employed in sport or physical activity operating in a first-line management position, able to work independently under some supervision and direction.

General Manager Qualification (GMQ): Experienced managers employed in sport or physical activity in a management position, able to work independently exhibiting management and leadership competencies.

This suite has been developed to fill a vacuum in management development that employers have identified and asked CIMSPA to resolve.

Aligning CIMSPA management membership with CIMSPA chartered status

The CIMSPA membership model aims to provide the sector with a clear and simple way to recognise an individual’s progression throughout their career and professional development.

CIMSPA membership creates a clear route that recognises the commitment and competencies of those operating in our sector. For those who have successfully progressed through CIMSPA management membership, the natural progression is to strive for chartered status. With three routes of entry for chartered status and a four-step process, the chartered status aims to build upon the experience and expertise already demonstrated by an individual and recognise the most exceptional of practitioners.

We have also streamlined the chartered process to ensure that this can be applied to all job roles of our sector where a chartered membership is suitable. The new pathways are designed to be inclusive and defined, ensuring they are open to all.
