Malcolm Roddie, FInstSRM(Ret)
Malcolm passed away aged 81 on 15th October 2017. He had enjoyed many happy years of retirement along with his wife, Rhona, at Penrith “Gateway to the Lakes”, since taking early retirement in 1988.
He enjoyed a busy and distinguished career since being one of the earlier articled apprentices learning under Bill Francis (Smethwick – as it was in those days). He developed his career with service at Rawmarsh (Rotherham), Luton, Grimsby, Whitley Bay (North Tyneside), eventually taking over in Birmingham for nineteen years.
He was IBRM Midlands President 1972-73 and served on the examinations board for many years, becoming chairman during negotiations with the National Examining Board for Supervision and Management and the National Joint Council. He was also a member of the IBRM national council and was the institute’s president 1982-83.
Malcolm initiated numerous training and educational schemes for the various employing authorities and for the Institute. He was especially proud to have helped so many students gain professional expertise and qualifications. He was awarded the FR Botham Award in 1979 in recognition of his meritorious work for the institute.
Our deepest sympathies are extended to Rhona and family.
