Guidance on sporting events during the period of National Mourning

Following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, there will be a period of National Mourning, continuing until the end of the day of the State Funeral.

There is no expectation on the public or organisations to observe specific behaviours during the mourning period. However, the Government has published some detailed information, intended to provide an explanation of National Mourning and outline some practical advice on how you or your organisation may wish to observe public mourning during this period.

You can read that guidance by clicking the link below.

READ THE FULL GUIDANCE

There is no formal obligation for organisations or national governing bodies (NGBs) to postpone or cancel sporting fixtures or events at either elite or grassroots level between now and the State Funeral. It is up to the discretion of individual organisations and sports to consider how they should proceed during the mourning period.

As a mark of respect, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands.

On the day of the State Funeral, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues. They are under no obligation to do so and this is entirely at the discretion of individual organisations. If sporting fixtures or events at either elite or grassroots level are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions.

Sport England advises all sports clubs to refer to their own NGB to check for any sport-specific decisions that have been made.
