London leisure centre project gets green light for initial plans

Alliance Leisure has been appointed to work on the concept design for a new leisure centre in London.

Appointed via the UK Leisure Framework, which is owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd (DLL), Alliance Leisure will help shape the new two-storey venue on behalf of Kingston upon Thames London Borough Council in South-West London.

With sustainability and accessibility at its heart, the design team includes architects Roberts Limbrick, Hadron Consulting, Design Active and Varsity QS.

Located in Kingston, on the site of the old Kingfisher Leisure Centre that closed in 2019, the centre with have a refurbished 25m, eight-lane pool with a smaller pool available for fun sessions.

There will also be accessibility incorporated into the design, both poolside and non-poolside for those with additional needs.

Other facilities will include a 150-station gym, four-court sports hall, three multi-activity studios, a group cycling studio, two squash courts, a spa suite with sauna and steam room, café and a soft play area.

Aiming to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating – an established method of assessing, rating, and certifying the sustainability of buildings – the development will incorporate net zero principles and a host of technologies to reduce carbon emissions and operating costs.
